President Obama: We must seek agreement on gun reforms

Heh – Fred-6 has gotten so good at Fred-6 Bingoisms he’s actually “writing” them in op-eds. This one comes from a rag in Arizona. Please note the following 1) Let me be clear (in this case, clearly), 2) the construction of a straw men via ‘there are those on one side/those on the other side’ and 3) USA! USA! I have faith in Americans blahahahahahahaha…

Fred-6 is an imbecile. Every day he holds power is another day I am chilled to the bone that two-fifth of the country are in love with this man. He’s not an imbecile because I don’t agree with him – Bill Clinton’s not an imbecile and I can’t stand him – he’s just an imbecile because he really thinks that this argument is new, novel, constructive, eloquent, lucid, persuasive etc.

Also, bear in mind that as Libya reaches a boil, gas prices soar, Japan just got hit with an 8.9 earthquake etc, this mofo went golfing … again. What the fuck does he do, exactly?

Oh that’s right – he leads from the rear. What a joke:

Clearly, there’s more we can do to prevent gun violence. But I want this to at least be the beginning of a new discussion on how we can keep America safe for all our people.

I know some aren’t interested in participating. Some will say that anything short of the most sweeping anti-gun legislation is a capitulation to the gun lobby. Others will predictably cast any discussion as the opening salvo in a wild-eyed scheme to take away everybody’s guns. And such hyperbole will become the fodder for overheated fundraising letters.

But I have more faith in the American people than that. Most gun-control advocates know that most gun owners are responsible citizens. Most gun owners know that the word “commonsense” isn’t a code word for “confiscation.” And none of us should be willing to remain passive in the face of violence or resigned to watching helplessly as another rampage unfolds on television.

Speaking of gun reform, there are three “open carry” bills up for debate in the Oklahoma House this session:

    1) would put the question of whether to allow open carry on a state ballot initiative.

    2) would just make open carry the default, like New Hampshire’s open carry law (one of the most generous in the nation, no surprise NH has the lowest per capita rate of gun crime in the nation as well). Basically, if you are an adult who has never been convinced of a felony, you can openly carry a loaded firearm on your person without needing a permit.

    3) would alter our current ‘concealed carry permit’ to simply be a ‘carry permit, open or concealed’.

Personally, I tend to favor option #3, don’t really have a problem with option #2, and think option #1 is a legislative cop-out for political pussies. But I’m betting option #1 is what gets passed (especially considering Rep. Tibbs, who wrote it, is on the the Public Safety Committee and has the power to bury the other two bills while letting hers get to the floor for a vote).

Although 3 is fine, I prefer 2 – I have zero tolerance for restricting gun rights among free people who don’t have violent criminal records.

  3. Eric says:

In theory I agree with you (which is why I am absolutely fine with #2). IRL, I think a minimum amount of training and familiarity with firearm safety and self-defense statutes makes for a safer and better gun-toting population, and is probably worth the sacrifice of freedom a loaded-carry-permit system entails (but not gun permit system). So I’m admittedly sort of a hypocrite on the issue, but still more pro-gun than 80% of the US population (I don’t think an open carry ballot question would have a prayer of passing even in gun friendly Oklahoma).

I’ve got an old “Check your guns at the door” sign that should increase in value with any of the options.

Not to mention, as we have discussed, I recently discovered that my Concealed Carry Permit doubles as a get-out-of-a-speeding-ticket card, and I would be loathe to give that up just to make it easier for other people to carry a gun. 😉
